Non Toxic Candles - which candle wax is best?

At the start of 2019 the UK Government published a new Clean Air Strategy, which looked at industry and farming as you would expect- but also looked at the products we use in our homes and how they might impact the environment and our health. You can read the document here.

There was a bit of fuss in the press about scented candles being banned, which is not the case - but it should make us think about what is in the scented candles we love to burn in our homes.

The advice is to look for non toxic alternatives, candles are often made from paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum. Paraffin was used as it has great "throw", which is how we describe how a scent fills the space when lit.

However there are now a great number of brands that use other more natural bases, such as beeswax which helps purify the air as it burns; soy which burns more slowly than paraffin, but is therefore more subtle. Or coconut wax which has a good scent throw and burns slowly too. Many manufacturers blend the waxes to get the best results, you will be able to read about the bases used in each of our product listings.

We also need to think about the wick material, cotton wicks are preferable to metal wicks, which can often contain lead.

Our promise to you is that we will only source candles with a natural base and a cotton wick. So you can enjoy burning candles at home without worrying about any nasties in the air.

Furthermore all the products we stock come in recycled/ recyclable pots that can be reused or taken to your local recycling centre.
